Justice Tarot Card Meaning
Justice is number 11 of the Major Arcana, linked to Air and Libra, and it is read as a symbol of fairness, honest accounting and consequences. Waite's 1910 text calls it "equity, rightness, probity", and modern readings keep that focus on weighing a situation by a clear standard.

Yes or no? Upright, Justice leans maybe: the answer depends on whether the facts and the fairness of the matter hold up. Reversed, it leans no, because bias, dishonesty or avoided accountability suggest the question has not been weighed honestly.

Justice upright meaning
Waite's list opens with equity, rightness and probity. In modern terms, that means treating a situation by a standard you would apply to anyone, and being honest about your own part in it. He also lists "executive", which can be read as acting on a decision once you have reached it instead of leaving it half made.
His phrase "triumph of the deserving side in law" sounds like a promised verdict. It is better read as a question: which side of this matter is actually fair, and are you standing on it? Justice does not forecast how any dispute will end. It asks you to look at the facts as they are.
The keywords are fairness, truth, law and cause and effect. The last one fits Waite's own description of a moral principle that deals to each person according to their works: choices have results, and Justice asks you to trace them honestly.
Libra and the element Air add a tone of balance and clear thinking. Air suggests stepping back from emotion long enough to see all sides. Libra adds the habit of weighing before deciding. Since 11 reduces to 2, the High Priestess, there is also a quieter strand: the fairness of Justice rests on listening and observing before you judge.
Symbols in the 1909 card
Waite says little about this image because it follows traditional symbolism, but he does note that the figure is seated between pillars, as the High Priestess is. The seat matters: a seated figure is read as someone who decides calmly instead of reacting. The pillars frame the figure like a doorway or a boundary, and they are read as the limits of a fair judgment, the rules that apply to everyone. Waite then draws a distinction. The moral principle that deals to each person according to their works is, in his words, different in essence from the spiritual justice of election, which he links to mysterious gifts that some people simply have and others lack, with no standard to explain them. Justice sits on the side of the knowable. Its pillars, he writes, open into one world and the Priestess's pillars into another. For a reader, that means Justice concerns clear, human accountability, not hidden or unexplained forces.
Justice reversed
Waite's reversed list reads "law in all its departments, legal complications, bigotry, bias, excessive severity." Modern readings leave the legal wording aside and focus on the attitudes behind it. Bias and bigotry point to judging before looking at the facts. Excessive severity can describe a harsh standard applied to others, or to yourself. The reversed keywords are unfairness, bias, dishonesty and avoiding accountability. They can point to a situation where the rules are applied unevenly, or where you are dodging the consequences of something you did. The question for this position is simple: what would a fair account of this look like, and who is avoiding it?
A card is reversed when it comes up upside down. Many readers take it as the card's meaning blocked, delayed or turned inward; some ignore reversals.
Justice in love and as feelings
In a relationship reading, Justice is read as a call for honesty and balance. It may point to a partnership where give and take should be talked about openly, or to a moment when past choices are shaping how things feel now. Cause and effect applies here: patterns in how you treat each other tend to produce matching responses. Fairness does not mean keeping score. It means both people are heard and neither is carrying the larger share unseen. As someone's feelings, Justice can suggest a person who is thinking carefully and wants things to be honest and even. They may be weighing the situation instead of acting on impulse, and may value straight talk over grand gestures. Reversed, it can point to feelings clouded by resentment or a sense of unfairness.
Justice for work and ambition
At work, Justice is read as a sign of fair dealing and clear standards. It may point to a choice that should rest on facts instead of favoritism, or to an attitude of owning your decisions and their consequences. With Libra's balance in mind, it can suggest weighing competing demands before committing. Reversed, it can flag bias in how you judge a colleague or a task, or a habit of avoiding responsibility.
When the Sun is in Libra in 2027
Justice is the card of Libra. In 2027 the Sun passes through Libra from September 23, 2027 to October 23, 2027 (Eastern time), computed from the site's ephemeris. People born in that window have their Sun there; tarot readers who use the attribution treat it as the card's season.
