The Hermit Tarot Card Meaning
The Hermit is number 9 of the Major Arcana, an Earth trump tied to Virgo and read as a call for solitude, careful thought and guidance. Waite pictures a figure on a height holding up a star in a lantern, so it is about stepping back and also about offering light to others.

Yes or no? Upright, The Hermit leans maybe: Waite's "prudence, circumspection" asks for more thought before an answer. Reversed it leans no, because fear and unreasoned caution suggest the question is being avoided, not weighed.

The Hermit upright meaning
Waite's list for this trump opens with "prudence, circumspection", and that is the part modern readers keep. It is read as a prompt to slow down, step away from noise and check your own judgment before acting. Waite then adds, "especially", treason, dissimulation, roguery and corruption. In modern terms that darker half can be read as a warning about hidden motives, including your own: time alone helps only if you are honest about what you find there.
The keywords point the same way. Solitude and introspection describe time alone used on purpose, such as stepping back from a decision to hear yourself think. Prudence describes weighing a choice before you commit to it. Guidance fits the Hermit as someone who has gone ahead and shows a way, not only someone who hides.
Virgo, the sign attached to The Hermit, suits the careful side. Together with the Earth element, it points to practical attention, sorting out details and refining what is already in front of you. Waite also rejects the idea that it is about guarding yourself from other people, which tells you not to read it as a simple instruction to shut the door.
Symbols in the 1909 card
Waite says his version differs from older decks in one point: the lamp is not partly wrapped in the bearer's mantle. Here the light is open to view, and it is a star that shines in the lantern. Read this as insight that is meant to be seen, not kept private. The bearer "blends the idea of the Ancient of Days with the Light of the World", which is why the figure is read as an old, settled authority and not a seeker still looking. He holds the beacon up "on an eminence", a high place that fits Waite's phrase "attainment": the climb has been made. Waite says the figure is not simply a wise man searching for truth, nor a mere example of experience. The mantle recalls the "Silent and Unknown Philosophy", yet Waite treats that as a mistaken reading and says the mysteries protect themselves from those who are unprepared.
The Hermit reversed
Waite's reversed list is "concealment, disguise, policy, fear, unreasoned caution". In modern terms, the chosen quiet of the upright position can become isolation, loneliness or withdrawal. The word that matters most is "unreasoned": caution you cannot give a reason for. Concealment and disguise can be read as showing others a front while keeping your real view back, and "policy" as choosing words for effect instead of honesty. Where the upright figure holds a star up so others may follow, this position can point to keeping everything to yourself. It may be worth asking what the fear is guarding, and whether it still needs to.
A card is reversed when it comes up upside down. Many readers take it as the card's meaning blocked, delayed or turned inward; some ignore reversals.
The Hermit in love and as feelings
In a relationship reading, The Hermit can point to a need for quiet, a partner who is reserved, or a pace that is deliberately slow. Waite's "circumspection" fits a couple who look carefully before deciding what comes next. Reversed, the same distance may read as one person holding back what they feel. For a single reader, it is often read as time spent getting to know yourself, with Virgo's eye for detail making you selective about who you let close. As someone's feelings, it suggests a thoughtful, private person who is still working out what they think and may not say it quickly. Waite's darker word "dissimulation" is a reminder to look for plain words and consistent behavior over silence.
The Hermit for work and ambition
At work, The Hermit is read as a sign of focus and careful judgment. Earth and Virgo favor close attention to detail, and solitude can mean protecting time to think a problem through. Guidance may appear as advising or mentoring someone, since the figure holds his light up for others. Reversed, excess caution can look like putting off a choice or holding back what you know.
When the Sun is in Virgo in 2027
The Hermit is the card of Virgo. In 2027 the Sun passes through Virgo from August 23, 2027 to September 23, 2027 (Eastern time), computed from the site's ephemeris. People born in that window have their Sun there; tarot readers who use the attribution treat it as the card's season.
Questions
✦Is The Hermit a good card?
It is mostly read as thoughtful, since Waite's list opens with prudence and circumspection. His list also ends with treason and dissimulation, so The Hermit asks for honesty about motives. Its value depends on whether the solitude is chosen and used well.
✦What does The Hermit mean as feelings?
As someone's feelings, it is read as reserved and considered, a person who is still thinking before saying much. Reversed, it can suggest holding back out of fear instead of a clear reason.
✦Does The Hermit mean I will be alone?
Not as a prediction. Solitude and introspection are the keywords, and they describe time alone used on purpose. Waite also stresses guidance, with the lantern held up so that others may reach the same place.
