Yes or no? Upright, the Wheel of Fortune leans yes. Waite's list of destiny, luck and elevation is favorable and suggests movement in your direction. Reversed, it leans maybe: delays and resistance may hold things up, which reads as "not yet" more than a firm no.

Wheel of Fortune upright meaning

Waite's short list for the upright meaning is "destiny, fortune, success, elevation, luck, felicity." In modern terms, that reads as a sense that events are moving and some of the movement is outside your control. Elevation and felicity point to a rise in mood or circumstance, though this is a mood of change, not a guarantee of anything.

The keywords are destiny, luck, turning points and cycles. A turning point is a moment when a long-running pattern changes direction. The idea of cycles adds that good and difficult phases both pass. The number 10 reduces to 1, The Magician, which is often taken to mean that a completed round returns you to a starting point where you can act again.

The Wheel is attributed to Jupiter, a link made by the Golden Dawn, and to the element Fire. Jupiter's association with growth and good fortune fits the hopeful tone of Waite's list. Fire adds restlessness and momentum, so the Wheel tends to be read as a prompt to notice what is already in motion and decide how to meet it.

Symbols in the 1909 card

Waite built the picture on a reconstruction by Eliphas Lévi. At the center is the wheel, which he says stands for perpetual motion and the flux of human life. The word Rota, his transliteration of Taro, is inscribed on it, alternating with the letters of the Divine Name. Waite takes this to mean that Providence runs through all the movement. Typhon appears in serpent form, and a Sphinx sits above as the equilibrium within the turning. Waite objects to versions where the Sphinx rests on a pedestal, since that spoils the idea of stability amidst movement. The Living Creatures of Ezekiel stand in the corners of the image. Waite reads the whole as a denial of chance, so the picture is read as a pattern you can stay steady inside.

Wheel of Fortune reversed

Waite's reversed meaning is "increase, abundance, superfluity." Superfluity means excess, so even the reversed Wheel in his list is not bleak. A modern reader may take it as having more than is useful, such as too many options or commitments. Most current readings rely instead on the reversed keywords: bad luck, resistance to change, delays and breaking a cycle. Here the wheel feels stuck or is turning against your plans. It can point to holding on to a situation that has already shifted, or to a wish to step out of a repeating pattern. It is a prompt to ask which part of the delay you can influence and which part you can only wait out.

A card is reversed when it comes up upside down. Many readers take it as the card's meaning blocked, delayed or turned inward; some ignore reversals.

Wheel of Fortune in love and as feelings

In a relationship reading, the Wheel of Fortune is read as a turning point. Something shifts in how two people relate, perhaps a change in circumstances or a moment that feels fated. Waite's "felicity" suggests a lighter mood, and the keyword cycles invites you to look at which patterns keep returning between you. As a person's feelings, it can describe someone who senses that the connection is part of something larger than a passing mood, and who is open to seeing where it goes. It can also describe someone who feels carried along by events and unsure how much choice they have. Reversed, it may point to resistance to change or a stalled stretch in which both people wait for the other to move.

Wheel of Fortune for work and ambition

At work, the Wheel is read as a change of circumstances that calls for adaptability, such as a new role, shifting priorities or a different direction. Waite's word "elevation" can point to a rise in confidence or responsibility. The cycles keyword suggests judging a slow period as part of a longer pattern. Reversed, it may show reluctance to adjust to change.

Questions

✦Is the Wheel of Fortune a good card?

It is generally read as favorable. Waite's list includes fortune, success, elevation, luck and felicity. Its core message is change, so how welcome it feels depends on what you hope will shift.

✦What does the Wheel of Fortune mean as feelings?

As someone's feelings, it can point to a sense that the connection is meaningful or fated, along with some uncertainty about how much is in their control. It may also describe a person who feels swept along by changing circumstances.

✦What does the Wheel of Fortune reversed mean?

Reversed, it is read through bad luck and resistance to change, along with delays and the breaking of a cycle. Waite's own reversed meaning is increase and abundance, plus superfluity, which modern readers may take as excess. Either way, the Wheel asks what you can influence and what you can only wait out.
