Death Tarot Card Meaning

Death is number 13 of the Major Arcana, and in the Rider–Waite–Smith deck it shows a slow rider rather than a grim reaper. It is read as a sign of endings and passage, not of literal death.

Yes or no? Death leans no upright. Its themes are endings and clearing away, which rarely give a clean yes. Reversed it also leans no: inertia and fear of endings suggest the situation is stuck, so what you ask about is not moving forward.

Death upright meaning

Waite's list opens with end and mortality, then moves on to destruction and corruption, which sounds bleak. In modern readings those words are translated into something less literal: a phase finishing, a habit or role wearing out, a situation that cannot continue in its old form. Waite himself describes Death as change, transformation and passage from lower to higher, and he prefers that vision to what he calls the crude notion of the reaping skeleton.

The keywords point the same way. Endings and transition describe both halves of the meaning: something closes, and you are carried across to what follows. Clearing away adds a practical note, the sense that space is being made. Waite's older lines about the loss of a benefactor or failed marriage projects are read today as a supporter stepping back or a plan that no longer fits.

The astrology is Scorpio, a Water sign, which matches Death's element. Scorpio is associated with intensity and with what happens below the surface, which suits a theme of what is released rather than what is displayed. The number 13 reduces to 4, The Emperor, so some readers see an ending that leads toward structure: after the clearing, something steadier can be built.

Symbols in the 1909 card

Waite describes a mysterious horseman who moves slowly, which is read as change that is steady rather than sudden. His black banner carries the Mystic Rose, which Waite says signifies life, so the flag is also a flag of continuity. Between pillars on the horizon the sun of immortality shines, read as a sign that something persists beyond the ending. The horseman carries no visible weapon, yet a king falls before him, and so do a child and a maiden. That is taken to mean that endings reach every rank and age alike. A prelate with clasped hands awaits his end, often read as acceptance rather than struggle. Waite adds that behind the figure lies the whole world of ascent in the spirit, so the background is read as what comes after.

Death reversed

Waite's reversed meaning centers on inertia and sleep, a state of going through the motions. Modern readings link that to resistance to change and fear of endings: something has run its course but is still being held in place. His word petrifaction suggests things turning to stone, and stagnation is the keyword that fits. His phrase "hope destroyed" is usually softened today into hope that has gone quiet because nothing is allowed to move. Reversed, Death can ask what you are holding on to, and whether the effort of holding is now larger than the thing itself.

A card is reversed when it comes up upside down. Many readers take it as the card's meaning blocked, delayed or turned inward; some ignore reversals.

Death in love and as feelings

In a relationship reading, Death is read as the end of a phase rather than automatically the end of the bond. A pattern, an old argument or a way of relating may be finishing, and Death asks what remains once it clears away. With Scorpio's Water behind it, the emotions involved tend to run deep and resist light conversation. Waite's note of failed marriage projects is read today as plans that no longer fit. As someone's feelings, Death can point to a person closing a chapter, perhaps sorting out whether they are leaving an old version of the relationship or the relationship itself. If you are single, it may point to letting a past attachment finish before something new starts.

Death for work and ambition

At work, Death is read as an attitude toward finishing: a project, role or way of working that has run its course. The clearing-away keyword may suggest dropping what no longer serves your direction. Waite's loss of a benefactor can be read as a mentor or sponsor stepping away, which asks you to stand more on your own. Death says nothing about how things turn out, only that a transition is underway.

When the Sun is in Scorpio in 2027

Death is the card of Scorpio. In 2027 the Sun passes through Scorpio from October 23, 2027 to November 22, 2027 (Eastern time), computed from the site's ephemeris. People born in that window have their Sun there; tarot readers who use the attribution treat it as the card's season.

Questions

✦Is Death a bad card?

No. Waite's wording is harsh, but he describes Death as change, transformation and passage from lower to higher, and the banner shows the Mystic Rose, which he says signifies life. It is read as an ending that makes room, not as a warning of harm.

✦What does Death mean reversed?

Reversed, it is read as resistance to change. Waite's words are inertia and sleep, and modern readers add fear of endings. It can ask what you are still holding on to after it has stopped working.

✦What does Death mean as feelings?

As someone's feelings, it is read as closing a chapter or letting go of an old way of relating. It can point to strong, private emotion, in line with Scorpio and Water. It does not mean the feelings are gone.
