Yes or no? Upright, Temperance leans yes, because its moderation and patience favor steady, well-measured steps. Reversed, it leans maybe: excess, impatience or clashing interests suggest the answer is "not yet" until the balance is restored.

Temperance upright meaning
Waite's own list for this one is short: economy, moderation, frugality, management, accommodation. In modern terms, these words describe good proportion. You use what you have wisely, adjust to the people around you and handle a situation steadily instead of forcing it. Waite also says Temperance "tempers, combines and harmonizes" the psychic and material natures, which is why balance and blending are the keywords most often attached to it.
Patience sits alongside them. Nothing in the picture is hurried: the pouring is steady, and a path behind the figure climbs gradually toward a light on the horizon. Temperance can point to a stage where progress comes from mixing the right amounts over time, not from a sudden push. It may also ask whether you are giving too much of one thing and too little of another.
The astrology adds a twist. Fire and Sagittarius suggest drive and a taste for far horizons, yet Temperance is calm. One way to read the pairing is as enthusiasm that has been measured and aimed, so it lasts. The number 14 reduces to 5, The Hierophant, which stands for learned tradition. Read alongside it, Temperance's balance looks like a skill built through practice, not a gift you either have or lack.
Symbols in the 1909 card
Waite describes a winged angel with the sign of the sun on the forehead and a square and triangle on the breast. He says the figure is neither male nor female. The wings and solar mark are read as a link between ordinary life and something higher, though Waite stresses the figure is not simply a sun spirit. It pours the "essences of life" from chalice to chalice, which is read as the steady exchange between parts of yourself or between people. A foot rests on earth and a foot on water. That is commonly taken to mean practical matters and feelings held together. A direct path rises toward the horizon, suggesting a clear, gradual direction. Above it is a great light with a crown seen vaguely, which can stand for a larger purpose that is not yet fully visible.
Temperance reversed
Waite's reversed list begins with churches, religions, sects and the priesthood, even the priest who will marry the Querent. Modern readings mostly set that aside and use the rest of his wording: disunion, unfortunate combinations and competing interests. Those fit the reversed keywords of excess, imbalance, impatience and clashing interests. The pouring stops being smooth. You may be overdoing one area, rushing a process that needs time or trying to blend things that pull in different directions. Temperance reversed may invite you to ask which demand is taking more than its share, and where a compromise has turned into friction.
A card is reversed when it comes up upside down. Many readers take it as the card's meaning blocked, delayed or turned inward; some ignore reversals.
Temperance in love and as feelings
In a relationship reading, Temperance is read as accommodation in Waite's sense: partners adjusting to each other without either one disappearing. It can point to a connection that grows by steady blending, and to the value of patience when you want different things at different speeds. As a question for you, it asks whether the give and take feels even. As someone's feelings, it is read as measured and sincere. This person may prefer to let things develop gradually, so they can seem reserved even when they are quite committed.
Temperance for work and ambition
At work, Temperance points to management and economy in Waite's terms: spreading effort sensibly and choosing a steady pace over bursts and crashes. It may favor choices that balance competing demands, and an attitude of flexibility with colleagues. The Sagittarius link suggests ambition aimed at a distant horizon, with the path in the picture reminding you that each step counts.
When the Sun is in Sagittarius in 2027
Temperance is the card of Sagittarius. In 2027 the Sun passes through Sagittarius from November 22, 2027 to December 21, 2027 (Eastern time), computed from the site's ephemeris. People born in that window have their Sun there; tarot readers who use the attribution treat it as the card's season.
Questions
✦Is Temperance a good card?
It is generally read as favorable, since its keywords include balance and patience. It may also be a gentle prompt to slow down or compromise, which is not always what you want to hear.
✦What does Temperance mean as feelings?
As someone's feelings, Temperance is read as calm and even. The person may prefer steady, gradual closeness over intensity, and may be weighing how to fit your needs with their own.
✦What does Temperance reversed mean?
Reversed, Temperance is read as imbalance: excess, impatience or interests pulling against each other. Waite also lists disunion and unfortunate combinations, so it may ask what is out of proportion.
