Yes or no? Upright, The Devil leans no. Its themes of compulsion and attachment suggest the pull toward the thing you are asking about may be stronger than your judgment. Reversed, it still leans no, since the bind is only being seen, not yet loosened.

The Devil upright meaning
Waite's list for The Devil sounds alarming. It opens with ravage and violence and goes on to vehemence, force and fatality. In modern readings that language is translated into intensity: a pull strong enough to override judgment, or effort that has tipped into strain. His closing phrase matters most, though. He calls it "that which is predestined but is not for this reason evil." So it is read as a description of a bind, not a verdict on you.
The keywords are attachment, temptation, compulsion and materialism. Treat them as questions. What are you holding onto because it feels safe or rewarding, and what has started to hold you? Materialism points to the weight placed on comfort, status or possessions, not to owning things as such. Temptation is rarely the issue by itself. The Devil tends to appear where wanting has turned into needing.
The Earth element ties The Devil to the body, appetite and everyday habit, the things that are physical and hard to argue with. Capricorn, its sign, adds a taste for structure and ambition, which can harden into a grind when duty or the wish to get ahead becomes the chain. The number 15 reduces to 6, The Lovers, a reminder that this is also about what we bond to and why we keep choosing it.
Symbols in the 1909 card
Waite places a horned goat with bat wings on an altar, so the figure that seems to rule is itself raised on something built. His right hand is lifted in a gesture Waite calls the reverse of a blessing, which can be read as a promise turned into pressure. The great torch in his left hand is inverted toward the earth, often taken as fire spent on appetite rather than used for light. A reversed pentagram on the forehead puts the material ahead of the spirit. A ring in front of the altar carries chains to the necks of the male and female figures. They are tailed, which Waite says marks the animal nature, yet their faces show human intelligence. He adds that the figure above is not their master forever and is himself a bondsman, blind to the liberty of service. Read this way, the chains are loose, and the bind depends on not noticing it.
The Devil reversed
Waite's reversed list runs from evil fatality to blindness, and includes weakness and pettiness. In modern terms it can describe a stretch where the hold of a habit or bond is still felt but is finally being seen. Keywords such as release and breaking free, or reclaiming control by facing a habit, all point to that moment of noticing. Because the chains in the picture hang loosely, this reading often stresses how little force may be needed once you look at them directly. Waite's weakness and pettiness can also be a warning: staying stuck in small resentments and excuses, or swapping one attachment for another. Reversed, The Devil asks what you would do if you stopped telling yourself there was no choice.
A card is reversed when it comes up upside down. Many readers take it as the card's meaning blocked, delayed or turned inward; some ignore reversals.
The Devil in love and as feelings
In a relationship reading, The Devil can point to a bond built on intensity, habit or fear of being alone more than on freedom. It may describe jealousy, possessiveness, or a pull that feels strong but leaves you smaller. It does not say the relationship is wrong; it asks whether both people are staying by choice. Its link to The Lovers through the number 6 makes that question sharper. As someone's feelings, it is read as strong attraction or fixation, a wanting that may be hard for them to put down or explain. Reversed, it can suggest loosening a grip, naming a pattern, or stepping back from something that has run on compulsion.
The Devil for work and ambition
At work, The Devil can point to an attachment to status, income or approval that has begun to steer your choices. Capricorn's ambition and the keyword materialism suggest asking whether you chose the pressure or merely got used to it. It can also flag overwork as habit. Reversed, it may suggest reconsidering a commitment you kept out of obligation, or setting limits you had avoided.
When the Sun is in Capricorn in 2027
The Devil is the card of Capricorn. In 2027 the Sun passes through Capricorn from December 21, 2027 to January 20, 2028 (Eastern time), computed from the site's ephemeris. People born in that window have their Sun there; tarot readers who use the attribution treat it as the card's season.
Questions
✦Is The Devil a good card?
It is not a comfortable one to draw, but it is not read as a curse. Waite himself says the fatality it shows is "not for this reason evil." It is most useful as a prompt to see what you are tied to.
✦What does The Devil mean as feelings?
As someone's feelings, it is read as strong attraction, fixation or a wanting that is hard to put down. It can describe intensity without saying whether the feeling is healthy or freely chosen.
✦What does The Devil reversed mean?
Reversed, it is read as release: noticing a habit or bond and starting to loosen it. It can also warn of staying stuck in excuses or trading one attachment for another.
