Yes or no? Upright, The Star leans yes: hope and renewal give it an encouraging tone. Reversed, it leans maybe, read as "not yet." Discouragement and self-doubt may be clouding the picture, so the answer depends on regaining your footing first.

The Star upright meaning
Waite's list is an odd match for an image now loved for its hope. His meaning starts with loss, theft, privation and abandonment, then adds that "another reading" says hope and bright prospects. In modern readings the first group is mostly set aside, or taken as the emptied-out feeling that comes before relief. Waite's own summary of the design is blunt: it stands for hope.
The keywords are hope, renewal, inspiration and calm. Renewal fits the figure who pours "Waters of Life freely": she gives without hoarding, and the image can point to energy returning after a hard stretch. Inspiration echoes Waite's other motto, "Gifts of the Spirit," which is read as ideas or trust that arrive without being forced. Calm comes from her unhurried posture, kneeling and pouring as if nothing were pressing.
Aquarius, a sign of Air, ties the Star to ideas, community and a view toward the future. The attribution comes from the Golden Dawn, the order Waite and Pamela Colman Smith belonged to. Air gives it a clear, open quality, and you may find you can see your situation from a wider angle. The number 17 reduces to 8, Strength, which suggests the hope here is quiet steadiness rather than loud confidence.
Symbols in the 1909 card
A great radiant star hangs overhead, ringed by lesser stars. Waite says it is l'étoile flamboyante from Masonic symbolism, and it is read as guidance that stays in view. The woman in the foreground is entirely naked, which is taken to mean openness with nothing hidden; Waite says she expresses eternal youth and beauty. Her left knee rests on the land and her right foot on the water, so she links solid ground with feeling. From her ewers she pours Water of Life over sea and land, giving to both. Behind her are rising ground and a shrub or tree where a bird alights, a sign of life settling in. Waite adds that for most minds she is Truth unveiled, and in his own reading the Great Mother of Understanding, who gives as much as each can receive.
The Star reversed
Waite's reversed meaning centers on arrogance and haughtiness, and he adds impotence. In modern terms, the haughtiness can be read as refusing to receive, like a figure who stops pouring and keeps the water to herself. Impotence becomes a feeling of powerlessness, as though nothing you do makes a difference. The reversed keywords lean toward discouragement and lost faith, with a sense of being cut off from others and doubting yourself. The reversal may ask where the flow has stopped: a hope you dropped, or help you have not let in. It is read as a dip in confidence, not a fixed state.
A card is reversed when it comes up upside down. Many readers take it as the card's meaning blocked, delayed or turned inward; some ignore reversals.
The Star in love and as feelings
In a relationship reading, The Star can point to a calmer, more open phase. The woman has nothing hidden, and the Star may invite you to be as unguarded with your partner, perhaps by saying aloud what you hope for together. If you are single, it is read as a softer attitude toward love, with less guarding and more trust in what comes. As someone's feelings, it can describe a person who feels hopeful and gentle toward you and is willing to be sincere. Reversed, it may suggest someone who is discouraged or wary, and who is holding back what they feel.
The Star for work and ambition
At work, The Star is read as a renewed sense of purpose. Inspiration and Aquarius's forward-looking Air can point to fresh ideas, or to a wish to share what you know with a wider group. It may favor choices made calmly rather than in a rush. If you feel drained, Waite's privation can be read as a pause before a restart. Reversed, discouragement may cloud your sense of direction.
When the Sun is in Aquarius in 2027
The Star is the card of Aquarius. In 2027 the Sun passes through Aquarius from January 20, 2027 to February 18, 2027 (Eastern time), computed from the site's ephemeris. People born in that window have their Sun there; tarot readers who use the attribution treat it as the card's season.
Questions
✦Is The Star a good card?
It is generally read as one of the more encouraging images in the deck. Waite sums it up as hope, and the keywords are hope and renewal. Inspiration and calm often come up too. His list of loss and abandonment is usually read as the hard stretch that comes before that relief.
✦What does The Star mean as feelings?
As someone's feelings, it can describe sincere openness and quiet optimism, like the unguarded figure pouring water freely. It may point to a person who feels hopeful about you or the situation. Reversed, it can suggest discouragement or doubt that keeps them from showing it.
✦What does The Star reversed mean?
Waite gives arrogance and haughtiness, plus impotence, which modern readers often turn into discouragement and a feeling of being cut off. It can point to hope that has dimmed or to a refusal to accept help. It is read as a low point you can work through, not a verdict.
