What a rising sign is
As the Earth turns, every sign of the zodiac comes up over the eastern horizon once a day, much like the Sun rises and sets. Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the sign that was coming up at the minute and place you were born. It is the reason astrologers ask for a birth time: the Sun and Moon signs depend on the date, but the rising sign depends on the clock and the map.
Astrologers read the rising sign as your manner: the first impression you make, how you start things, the way you dress and move, and the approach you take when you walk into an unfamiliar room. It also fixes the houses of the chart, which is why horoscopes written "for your rising sign" can be more specific than ones written for your sun sign.
How to read your result
Sun sign. The sign the Sun was in, with its degree. If you were born on a day the Sun changed sign (around the 19th to 23rd of each month), this is the result to trust over a newspaper table of dates.
Moon sign. The sign the Moon was in at your birth time. If the Moon changed sign that day, a note gives the exact time of the change, so you can see how close you were to it.
Rising sign. The sign and degree of your Ascendant. The calculator also checks the half hour before and after your birth time. If the rising sign is different there, you see a note: a birth time rounded to the hour, or remembered by a relative, is the most common reason two calculators disagree.
Without a birth time. You get your Sun and Moon signs for the whole birth date, both signs if either one changed that day, and no rising sign. The rising sign cannot be guessed from the date.
Why the rising sign is so sensitive to the time
Twelve signs rise in 24 hours, so on average one sign rises every two hours and the Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. The average hides a big difference. At 40° north, the latitude of Philadelphia, Columbus and Denver, our engine finds that Pisces and Aries each rise in about 1 hour 12 minutes, Taurus and Aquarius in under 1½ hours, and Leo through Scorpio in about 2½ hours each. If your Ascendant is in a fast-rising sign, a 20-minute error can change it. The farther north you were born, the stronger the effect.

How the calculator works
Your birth date, time and city become one moment in Universal Time. The city list (about 34,000 places from GeoNames) carries each place's IANA time zone, so the offset and daylight saving rule in force on that date are applied, including years when the rules were different. From that moment and the city's latitude and longitude, the calculator finds the local sidereal time and the point where the ecliptic, the Sun's path, crosses the eastern horizon. That point is the Ascendant. The Sun and Moon positions come from the same engine that times the events on this site; the details and the tests against NASA JPL Horizons and Swiss Ephemeris reference charts are on the methodology page. The zodiac is tropical, and dates from 1900 to 2100 are supported.
Astrology here is offered for entertainment and self-reflection. A rising sign describes a style, not a fixed personality or a prediction.
Questions people ask
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so a birth date alone leaves up to twelve possibilities. Without a time, this calculator still gives your Sun and Moon signs and says which one changed that day. If you only know the time roughly, enter your best guess and look at the note under the result: it tells you when a 30-minute error would change the rising sign.
What is the big three in astrology?
Your Sun, Moon and rising signs. The Sun sign stands for identity and purpose, the Moon sign for emotions and needs, and the rising sign (Ascendant) for how you meet the world and how others first see you. Together they are the short summary astrologers and apps give before the rest of the birth chart.
Why do I need my birth city?
The rising sign is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at your birth, and the horizon depends on where you stand. Two people born at the same minute in New York and in Los Angeles can have different rising signs. The city also gives the time zone and the daylight saving rule that applied on your birth date.
Is the rising sign the same as the Ascendant?
Yes. The Ascendant is the exact degree of the zodiac rising in the east, for example 14° Libra; the rising sign is the sign that degree falls in. In most house systems the Ascendant also starts the first house of the chart.
Why did another site give me a different rising sign?
Almost always the input: a different birth time, a time zone without daylight saving, or a nearby city with different coordinates. Check the time on your birth certificate and the place you entered. A second cause is the zodiac: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which puts most Ascendants one sign earlier than the tropical zodiac used here.
Do you store my birth data?
No. The calculation runs in your browser. The date, time and place are not sent to a server and are not saved.
