Your numerology chart: the five core numbers

A numerology chart starts from two sources, your date of birth and your name at birth. The date gives the life path and birthday numbers; the letters of the name give the expression, soul urge and personality numbers. Numerologists read the five together: the life path as the general direction, the name numbers as the tools and wishes you bring to it.

Life path
The full birth date, with month, day and year reduced separately. The life path number calculator covers it in depth.
Expression (destiny)
Every letter of the full name. Read as natural talents and the way you tend to work.
Soul urge (heart's desire)
The vowels only. Read as private motivation: what feels rewarding to you.
Personality
The consonants only. Read as the outer layer: first impressions and how others see you.
Birthday
The day of the month you were born, reduced. Read as one specific skill, a smaller detail next to the life path.

The Pythagorean letter chart

This calculator uses the Pythagorean system, the one most Western numerology books use. Letters are numbered 1 to 9 in alphabetical order and the count starts again after I and after R:

A1B2C3D4E5F6G7H8I9
J1K2L3M4N5O6P7Q8R9
S1T2U3V4W5X6Y7Z8

The other common system, Chaldean, numbers letters by sound from 1 to 8 and is not used here, so results from Chaldean calculators will differ.

A worked example

Take the name Mary Ann Smith. Each word is added up and reduced on its own, then the words are added:

  • MARY: 4 + 1 + 9 + 7 = 21, 2 + 1 = 3
  • ANN: 1 + 5 + 5 = 11
  • SMITH: 1 + 4 + 9 + 2 + 8 = 24, 2 + 4 = 6
  • Expression: 3 + 11 + 6 = 20, 2 + 0 = 2
  • Soul urge, vowels only (A and Y in Mary, A in Ann, I in Smith): 8 + 1 + 9 = 18, 1 + 8 = 9
  • Personality, consonants only: 4 + 1 + 6 = 11

The Y in Mary counts as a vowel because no vowel stands right after it. Master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept wherever they appear, in a single word or in the total.

How to read your numerology chart

Start with the life path, then look for repeats. When the same number shows up two or three times, numerologists treat its theme as a strong one in the chart. When the soul urge and the personality numbers differ a lot, say a 7 inside and a 3 outside, it is read as a gap between what you want and how you come across, which many people find the most useful part of the reading.

The short meanings in the result describe tendencies, not fixed traits. For the theme of a particular year, use the personal year calculator. Longer readings of each life path, with how common it is, are in the numerology section.

Method and privacy

Letters are converted to A–Z (accents removed), each word is reduced separately with master numbers kept, and Y is a vowel only when no vowel is next to it. The code is tested against hand-worked names and dates. Your name and birth date stay in your browser: nothing is sent to a server or saved. More on how the site is built on the methodology page.

Questions

✦Which name should I enter?

The full name on your birth certificate, including middle names, is the traditional choice for the core chart. You can also run your current or married name to compare: numerologists read a later name as an added layer, not a replacement.

✦Is Y a vowel in numerology?

It depends on how it sounds. This calculator counts Y as a vowel when no other vowel stands next to it, as in Mary or Lynn, and as a consonant when it sits beside a vowel, as in Yolanda or Bryan. The letter table in your result marks every vowel in gold, so you can see how your Y was counted.

✦What is the difference between expression, soul urge and personality numbers?

All three come from your name. Expression uses every letter and is read as your overall abilities. Soul urge (also called heart's desire) uses only the vowels and is read as what you want inwardly. Personality uses only the consonants and is read as the impression you give to people who don't know you well.

✦What do I do with letters that have accents?

Accented letters count as their plain form: é as E, ñ as N. Hyphens, apostrophes and spaces are ignored, and each part of the name is reduced on its own before the parts are added.

✦Why is my number different on another site?

Calculators differ in three places: whether they reduce each name separately or add all letters at once, how they treat Y, and whether they keep master numbers. The final single digit usually matches; master numbers and Y-heavy names are where results split. The method used here is written out below.

✦Is numerology accurate?

Numerology is a symbolic tradition, not a science. There is no evidence that name or birth-date numbers predict character or events. Read the results as prompts for reflection.
