What a life path number is
In Pythagorean numerology, the system most Western numerologists use, the life path number is the main number of a birth chart. It comes from the full date of birth and is read as a summary of temperament: what tends to motivate you, the kind of work and relationships that fit, and the habits worth watching. It is the number most people mean when they ask “what is my number?”
There are twelve possible results: the single digits 1 to 9 and the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. The calculator above shows which one you have and how it was reached.
How the life path number is calculated
The month, the day and the year are each reduced to one digit by adding their digits, and the three results are added together and reduced again. Take July 4, 1990:
- Month: July is 7.
- Day: 4.
- Year: 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, 1 + 9 = 10, 1 + 0 = 1.
- Total: 7 + 4 + 1 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3. Life path 3.
Reducing each part first matters when a master number shows up on the way. For November 29, 1985 the month stays 11, the day is 2 + 9 = 11 and is also kept, the year is 1 + 9 + 8 + 5 = 23, 2 + 3 = 5. The total is 11 + 11 + 5 = 27, then 2 + 7 = 9: life path 9.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33
When a sum lands on 11, 22 or 33, numerologists stop reducing. These master numbers are read as intensified versions of 2, 4 and 6: the same themes with higher stakes, often described as more inspiring and more stressful to live with. The calculator keeps a master number in the month, the day, the year and the final total, and says so in the steps when it does.
How common each life path number is
Every date from January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2009 was run through the same calculation. Seven of the single digits come up about equally often; 2, 4 and 6 come up less, because some of their dates stop at 11, 22 or 33.

What each number means
These are short summaries of how numerologists usually read each life path. They describe tendencies, not fixed traits or fate, and plenty of people recognize themselves in more than one.
- 1 · The initiator
- Independence, drive and the urge to start things. One is read as the number of people who would rather lead than wait for permission. Watch for: impatience, and doing everything alone because asking feels slow.
- 2 · The partner
- Cooperation, tact and a feel for other people's moods. Two is linked with diplomats, mediators and the friend who notices what is left unsaid. Watch for: over-accommodating and swallowing your own opinion to keep the peace.
- 3 · The communicator
- Expression, humor and creative energy. Three is tied to writing, performing, talking and making ordinary moments more fun. Watch for: scattered focus: many started projects, fewer finished ones.
- 4 · The builder
- Structure, patience and steady work. Four stands for foundations: systems, routines and plans that hold up over time. Watch for: rigidity, and treating rest as something that has to be earned.
- 5 · The explorer
- Freedom, curiosity and change. Five is associated with travel, variety and learning by trying things rather than reading about them. Watch for: restlessness, and leaving situations before they have had a chance to work.
- 6 · The caretaker
- Responsibility, home and care for others. Six is the number of the person people call when something goes wrong. Watch for: taking on other people's problems as if they were your own.
- 7 · The seeker
- Analysis, introspection and a need to understand what lies under the surface. Seven is linked with research, spirituality and time alone. Watch for: withdrawing into your head and trusting no one's conclusions but your own.
- 8 · The executive
- Ambition, authority and skill with resources. Eight is associated with business, management and turning plans into measurable results. Watch for: measuring your worth by status or output.
- 9 · The humanitarian
- Compassion, idealism and a wide view of the world. Nine, the last single digit, is read as the number of completion and giving back. Watch for: holding on to the past, or giving to others until little is left for you.
- 11 · The intuitive (master number)
- A heightened version of 2: sensitivity, intuition and the ability to inspire. Numerologists treat 11 as a number of strong ideals and nervous energy. Watch for: anxiety and self-doubt when the ideals feel out of reach. It also carries the traits of 2.
- 22 · The master builder (master number)
- A heightened version of 4: big plans backed by the discipline to build them. 22 is linked with practical vision, from institutions to long projects. Watch for: pressure to make something huge of your life. It also carries the traits of 4.
- 33 · The master teacher (master number)
- A heightened version of 6: care and responsibility on a wider scale, through teaching, healing or creative work. It is the rarest life path. Watch for: self-sacrifice and setting standards no one could meet. It also carries the traits of 6.
Method and sources
The calculation follows the Pythagorean system as it is taught in most modern numerology books: reduce month, day and year separately, keep master numbers. The code that does it is tested against hand-worked dates, including dates that produce 11, 22 and 33. Your birth date is processed in your browser and never sent anywhere. The interpretations are short and written for this site from the common reading of each number; see how the site is made.
For the numbers that come from your name, use the numerology calculator. For the theme of a single calendar year, use the personal year calculator.
Questions
✦How do I calculate my life path number by hand?
Reduce the month, the day and the year of your birth to single digits separately, keeping 11, 22 and 33 if they appear. Add the three results and reduce the total the same way. July 4, 1990 gives 7 + 4 + 1 = 12, then 1 + 2 = 3.
✦Why do other calculators give me a different number?
Some add all eight digits of the date in one line instead of reducing month, day and year first. The single digit at the end is the same either way, but the two methods disagree on whether you land on a master number. For January 2, 1990 the line method gives 22, the month-day-year method gives 4. This calculator uses month-day-year, the more common convention.
✦Is 11 a life path 2, and 22 a life path 4?
Numerologists usually read a master number as a stronger, more demanding version of its digit sum: 11 carries the traits of 2, 22 those of 4, 33 those of 6. The number this calculator reports is the final total; master numbers in the month, day or year are kept inside the sum and marked in the steps.
✦Which life path number is the rarest?
Among all birth dates from 1950 to 2009, 33 is the rarest at about 0.9%, then 22 at about 3.1%. Life path 2 is also less common than most single digits, because many sums that would reduce to 2 stop at 11 instead.
✦Does my life path number change if I change my name?
No. The life path comes only from the birth date. Name changes affect the name-based numbers (expression, soul urge, personality), which the numerology calculator on this site works out.
✦Is numerology scientifically proven?
No. Numerology is a symbolic tradition, not a science, and no study has shown that a birth-date number predicts personality or events. Use the reading as a prompt for self-reflection, not as a forecast.
