Moon sign calculator

Enter your birth date and the city you were born in. The birth time is optional: if the Moon changed signs that day, you get both signs and the minute it switched.

The place sets the time zone, including daylight saving time in force on that date. City data: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).

What your moon sign is

Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. The Moon is the fastest body astrologers use: it moves 12° to 15° a day and goes through all twelve signs in about 27 days, so it spends a little over two days in each one. Two people born the same week can have the same sun sign and different moon signs.

In Western astrology the Moon describes the emotional side of a person: how you react before you think, what you need in order to feel safe, the habits you fall back on when tired, and the kind of care you give and expect. If the sun sign is the part of you that people meet at work, the moon sign is closer to the person at home.

How to read your result

One sign. If you see a single sign, the Moon was in that sign for your whole birth date in your birth place's time zone. The birth time does not change it. With a time, you also get the degree, from 0° to 29°59′.

Two signs and a time. On a little under half of all days, the Moon crosses from one sign into the next. The calculator shows the minute it happened, in the local time of your birth place. Born before that minute, your Moon is in the first sign; after it, in the second. If you know you were born "in the morning" or "around dinner", that is often enough to decide. If the change was close to your birth time, find the time on your birth certificate; in the US, the long-form certificate usually records it.

A degree near 0° or 29°. This only says the Moon had just entered or was about to leave the sign. It does not make you "half" of each sign; the sign the Moon was in is the one that counts.

The Moon in each sign, in one line

Short traditional readings, the starting point astrologers use before looking at the rest of the chart:

  • Moon in Aries: Feelings flare up fast and burn off fast. Needs to act on an emotion, not sit with it.
  • Moon in Taurus: Steady and comfort-seeking; the Moon is traditionally exalted here. Calmed by routine, food, touch and things that last.
  • Moon in Gemini: Processes feelings by talking and naming them. Restless when bored, soothed by conversation and new information.
  • Moon in Cancer: The Moon's own sign. Protective, nostalgic, deeply attached to home and family, quick to sense moods in a room.
  • Moon in Leo: Wants to be seen and appreciated. Warm and generous, hurt more by being ignored than by being criticized.
  • Moon in Virgo: Calms down by fixing, sorting and being useful. Worry shows up as attention to detail.
  • Moon in Libra: Needs balance and company. Feels best when relationships are fair and the surroundings are pleasant.
  • Moon in Scorpio: The Moon's traditional fall. Feels intensely and privately, slow to trust, loyal once it does.
  • Moon in Sagittarius: Needs room and a sense of meaning. Lifts its mood with travel, ideas, humor and plans.
  • Moon in Capricorn: The Moon's traditional detriment. Feelings are handled with self-control and duty; security comes from achievement.
  • Moon in Aquarius: Feels a little at a distance. Comfortable with friends and causes, uneasy when emotions get possessive.
  • Moon in Pisces: Absorbent and imaginative. Picks up other people's moods, needs quiet time, art or music to reset.

A moon sign is one factor among many. Read it next to your sun and rising signs, which the rising sign calculator gives you from the same birth data.

How the calculator works

The date, time and place you enter become one exact moment in Universal Time. The city list holds about 34,000 places from GeoNames, each with its IANA time zone, so the calculator applies whatever offset and daylight saving rule was in force on your birth date: Eastern Standard Time in a New York January, Eastern Daylight Time in July, and no daylight saving in most of Arizona.

Without a birth time, the calculator takes the whole local day, from midnight to midnight in your birth place, and searches it for the moment the Moon's ecliptic longitude crossed a multiple of 30°, the boundary between two signs. With a time, it computes the Moon's apparent geocentric position for that instant. Both use the same engine that times the new and full moons on this site, with the tropical zodiac. The full details, including how the engine is tested, are on the methodology page. Dates from 1900 to 2100 are supported.

Astrology here is offered for entertainment and self-reflection. A moon sign describes a mood and a style, not a diagnosis or a prediction.

Questions people ask

Can I find my moon sign without a birth time?

Usually, yes. The Moon stays in one sign for a little over two days, so on most birth dates it is in the same sign from midnight to midnight. On a little under half of all days it changes sign at some point during the day. In that case the calculator shows both signs and the exact time of the change in your birth place's time zone, so you can decide which applies if you know roughly when you were born.

Why does the birth place matter for the moon sign?

The place sets the time zone. Midnight in Los Angeles is 3 a.m. in New York and 8 a.m. in London, and the Moon moves about half a degree per hour. If the Moon changed sign on your birth date, the time zone decides which side of the change you were born on. The place also matters for the rising sign, but the Moon's zodiac position itself is the same for everyone on Earth at the same instant.

What is the difference between a sun sign and a moon sign?

The sun sign is the sign the Sun was in when you were born. It changes about once a month and is the one used for newspaper horoscopes. The moon sign is the sign the Moon was in, and it changes every two to three days. In astrology the Sun stands for identity and drive, and the Moon for emotional needs, habits and what makes you feel safe.

Is this the tropical or the sidereal zodiac?

Tropical, the zodiac used by most Western astrologers, where 0° Aries is the March equinox point. Vedic (sidereal) astrology shifts every position back by about 24°, so your Vedic moon sign is often one sign earlier.

How accurate is this moon sign calculator?

The Moon's position comes from astronomy-engine, an open-source ephemeris. In this site's tests it agrees with NASA JPL Horizons to within a few seconds of arc, and the Moon covers that distance in a few seconds of time, so the time of a sign change is accurate to the minute. The usual source of error is the input: a birth time rounded to the hour, or a time zone that was different at the time. The calculator applies the historical time zone and daylight saving rules for the place and date.

Do you store my birth data?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. The date, time and place are not sent to a server and are not saved.
