Fire Signs: Aries, Leo and Sagittarius

Fire is the element of three zodiac signs. Aries is cardinal and ruled by Mars. Leo is fixed and ruled by the Sun. Sagittarius is mutable and ruled by Jupiter. They sit 120° apart around the zodiac, so each pair forms a trine, the aspect astrologers read as ease and shared rhythm.

Traditional writers gave the group a clear temperament. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), calls the fiery triplicity hot and dry, and describes it as choleric and masculine.

The Sun spends about a month in each fire sign. In 2027 it enters Aries on March 20, 2027 at 4:24 PM EDT and leaves on April 20, 2027 at 3:17 AM EDT. It reaches Leo on July 22, 2027 at 9:04 PM EDT. Sagittarius follows on November 22, 2027 at 8:16 AM EST. The table lists every window for 2026 and 2027, so you can check which fire season your birthday falls in.

Fire signs are usually described as eager and warm, and quick to act. Modern practice links the element with enthusiasm and courage, plus a wish to be seen. The shadow side is impatience, which can bring impulsiveness and pride.

Alan Leo, in Astrology for All (1899), places Aries at the head of the fiery triplicity. He ties it to the head, so its people look forward and lead with ideals, though they can be headstrong. Leo is the centre of the group and governs the heart, with a strong and ardent love nature that is also sincere. Sagittarius is the last of the three, which he calls the union of head and heart sent upward.

That order shows why these signs read as one family with three moods. Aries leads with ideals, while Leo prefers to live them rather than talk about them. Sagittarius aims for the highest. Lilly's older word, choleric, points in the same direction.

Each fire sign burns differently, and Alan Leo's comparison makes the point: Aries is the common soldier who rushes headlong into the fight, Leo is the captain, and Sagittarius is the general.

Aries is cardinal, ruled by Mars, and described as pioneering and frank, with an independent streak. Its people love novelty and big enterprises, and they tend to act on impulse. At its worst the sign slips into jealousy or deception. Leo is fixed and ruled by the Sun. It is read as magnetic and vital, and generous with feelings that it shows in action. It does best in positions of authority, and its typical excess is being led too easily by feeling.

Sagittarius is mutable and ruled by Jupiter. Traditionally it is the archer, a sign of freedom that aims for the highest. Its people are hopeful and frank, and they are drawn to teaching and philosophy. Pushed too far, the sign turns restless and blunt, and says far more than it means.

Fire signs are traditionally most at ease with each other and with air. Because the three sit 120° apart, any two of them form a trine, which astrologers read as ease and shared rhythm. Any two fire signs share the same enthusiasm, though two of the same sign can also double the impatience.

Air is the classic partner. Alan Leo notes that the fiery and airy triplicities are in sympathy and that the best unions arise from them. Modern practice gives a simple picture: air feeds fire because ideas and talk keep it going. Water and earth can feel like they dampen or slow it.

Alan Leo adds that an Aries can find earth signs too practical and water signs too emotional. Treat all of this as a starting point for reflection, since a full comparison looks at both birth charts. You can read pair pages such as Aries and Leo or Leo and Sagittarius for more detail.

At the start of 2027, three planets sit in fire signs. Jupiter is at 26°25′ Leo and retrograde. Saturn is at 8°20′ Aries, and Neptune is at 1°43′ Aries. Astrologers read Jupiter as growth, generosity and faith, so its place in Leo is often followed through that sign's warmth and pride.

Faster planets move through the element all year. Venus enters Sagittarius on January 7, 2027. Mars enters Leo on February 21, 2027, and it is retrograde at that point. Mercury enters Aries on April 8, 2027, and Venus follows into Aries on April 19, 2027.

Later in the year Venus enters Leo on July 27, 2027, and Mercury enters Leo on August 2, 2027. Mars enters Sagittarius on October 15, 2027. Venus returns to Sagittarius on November 1, 2027, and Mercury arrives there on November 29, 2027. At each ingress, astrologers say that planet's themes, such as Mercury's talk or Mars's drive, take on the tone of fire.
