Solar Eclipse August 2027 in Leo: Time & Meaning

The total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 falls at 9°55′ Leo, a New Moon that carries more weight than usual and keeps its themes active for months. It arrives two weeks after a penumbral lunar eclipse in Capricorn and two weeks before another in Aquarius.

A solar eclipse is a New Moon near the lunar nodes, so it works like a stronger start. This one is total: the Moon covers the Sun completely, the sky darkens and the corona shows. Read it as an invitation to look at what you want to begin, not as a fixed outcome.

Leo is fixed fire ruled by the Sun, so the Sun and Moon meet in the sign that is most at home with the Sun. Leo is warm-hearted, generous, magnetic and sincere, and it prefers to show feeling through action. At 9°55′ Leo, you may notice questions about where you lead, what you stand behind and how openly you give. The shadow side is being led too easily by feeling, so generosity and impulse can get taken advantage of.

Where this lands depends on your rising sign. With Leo rising it falls in the 1st house of self and how you start things. Cancer rising puts it in the 2nd house of values, and Gemini in the 3rd house of conversation and learning. Aries rising feels it in the 5th house of romance and creativity. Aquarius rising gets the 7th house of partners, Capricorn the 8th of intimacy, Libra the 11th of friends and hopes, and Virgo the 12th of rest and the hidden. Other rising signs find it in the remaining houses.

Venus sits at 7°16′ Leo, close to the eclipse point, which ties love, pleasure and harmony to the same theme of warmth and open expression. Mercury at 29°56′ Cancer is on the last edge of its sign, so thinking and speech carry a sensitive, memory-laden tone just before they cross into Leo. Mars at 10°41′ Libra asks for fairness in how you act, and Jupiter at 1°29′ Virgo adds a careful, practical push toward growth through detail.

Two slow planets are retrograde. Neptune at 6°31′ Aries is retrograde until December 15, 2027, so ideals and imagination get a second look for months after the eclipse; it is a good time to separate a pioneering vision from wishful thinking. Pluto at 5°51′ Aquarius is retrograde until October 17, 2027, which turns attention to what is hidden, to endings and renewal, and to reform that serves many people.

The eclipses on either side frame the season. The penumbral lunar eclipse in Capricorn on July 18, 2027 leans toward duty and structure. The penumbral lunar eclipse in Aquarius on August 17, 2027 turns toward friends and original thinking. Between them, the Leo eclipse is the personal, heartfelt middle: a good time to ask what you want to build and who you want to share it with.
